Yersinia enterocolitica occurs as mintage of rod-shaped bacterium, belonging to the family Enterobacteriaceae.
It produces entero-colitis, fever, mesenteric adenitis, erythema nodosum and acute terminal ileitis. These are normally confused by having appendicitis or Crohn's disease. Contagions come occasionally followed by arthritis.
A genus Yersinia is named for Alexandre Emile John Yersin, a Swiss bacteriologist.
